“Malls Should Not Sell Clothes Inappropriate for UAE”

Judging by the number of comments from readers, Fatma Salem’s article, ‘Dubai Malls Join Anti-Indecency Campaign’ (7 August 2009) is creating quite a stir.

The article highlights the signs placed at the main entrances of many Dubai malls indicating the need to wear ‘respectable clothing', to refrain from kissing, showing public displays of affection, and consuming alcohol.

It reports the response of a Russian businesswoman wearing a sleeveless, short skirt who was handed a brochure concerning the courtesy policy, dress code and general behavior expected at the Mall of the Emirates.

Many of the reader’s comments are supportive of the awareness programme and one man from the Philippines tells about the thorough Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) he was given explaining the do’s and don’ts in the UAE.

Aliah of Dubai has this brief word concerning the campaign organizers and shopkeepers: “Malls should not sell clothes that are not appropriate for the country.”

It will be interesting to see if the Dubai Anti-Indecency Campaign extends this far and heeds Aliah’s opinion.
